About Stanley Gullage
Stanley was born Aug 18, 1929 in Catalina Newfoundland to Effie and Selby Gullage. In 1956 he met the love of his life, Violet Crewe and they were married Jan 22, 1958.
On Jan 6, 1960, Stan arrived in Carol Lake, which is now known as Labrador City to take employment with the Iron Ore Company of Canada as a heavy equipment operator. This is where he continued to work and where 3 of his children were born, Brian, Keith and Tracey.
Stan watched the community grow from little more than a bush camp into the vibrant community it is today. Often, due to his skill as a crane operator, he would be called to assist in the construction. For example, when the Carol United Church was built, Stan was on the crane which was used to raise the beams. His biggest lift was a tandem lift, when Stan and Gerry Manning, also a crane operator, lifted a Quebecair Boeing 737 out of the bog and back on the runway, after an aborted takeoff at Wabush Airport. Eventually, he became a grandfather, and his grandchildren were the joy of his life. There was nothing he would not do for his grandchildren. And, at the time of his passing he was also a the proud great grandfather of two beautiful little girls. Stan will certainly be missed by those he left behind, but he left us with uncountable good memories, and many funny stories which we will continue to share, as we remember this wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
